Who we are ?
The Polish Parasitological Society (PTP) was founded during the First Congress of Polish Parasitologists, held on May 16, 1948, at the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk. Professor Zbigniew Kozar was the founder of the Society, and Professor Jerzy Morzycki served as its first president.
The Society aims to promote and develop various fields of parasitology, as well as to represent parasitology and parasitologists in scientific bodies, such as the committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Currently, the Society has 11 local branches and more than 300 members. The Society also includes three sections: general, medical, and veterinary parasitology.
Since 1954, the Society has published a quarterly journal, Annals of Parasitology, formerly known as Wiadomości Parazytologiczne. In 1955, the Main Board of the Society initiated a publishing series entitled Parasitological Monographs, and in 1971, a second series—the Catalogue of the Parasitic Fauna of Poland—was launched. To date, twenty volumes of Parasitological Monographs and nine parts of the Catalogue have been published.
During PTP meetings, held every 3 years, the Society awards distinctions and prizes commemorating outstanding Polish parasitologists. These include awards for exceptional contributions to Polish parasitology (the Konstanty Janicki Medal), for original and outstanding publications in general, veterinary, or medical parasitology by young scientists (the Witold Stefański Award), as well as the title of Honorary Member of the PTP. The latter is conferred upon individuals who have made exceptional contributions to parasitology, particularly Polish parasitology.
In addition to organizing its regular meetings, the Society supports and co-organizes numerous scientific conferences arranged by individual departments and sections of the Polish Parasitological Society.
